Santa Claus, known as “Red One,” gets kidnapped right from his secret hideout at the North Pole. His top guard and security chief decides to save him in time for Christmas, teaming up with a super clever hacker who might know who’s behind this whole plan and where Santa’s being held.
The story kicks off with Santa, played by J.K. Simmons, lazily snapping pics with kids at a mall just before Christmas Eve. According to him, malls are the most ’emotion-filled’ places on Earth. Right after that moment, a special ops team swoops in to escort him out safely, almost like he’s the President! Leading the way is his trusty bodyguard played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He’s thinking about retirement but not before teaming up again with his buddy from Seven Bucks Productions.
At first, the film captures your interest with this cool idea about an agency that protects mythical beings like Santa Claus. But things start getting messy when Santa gets kidnapped and more twists come into play.
So, here’s the deal: The movie kicks off with this wild plot twist where someone actually kidnaps Santa Claus. Yep, you heard right! Our main guy, Callum Drift (played by The Rock), is on the case trying to figure out who’s behind this bonkers plan. He’s got a lead on this hacker who knows too much about where the North Pole is hiding—like it’s undercover under some invisible dome or something.
Now here’s where it gets fun: Callum teams up with Jack O’Malley, this smooth-talking troublemaker played by Chris Evans. These two can’t stand each other at first—they’re as different as night and day—but guess what? They’ve gotta save Christmas together, so they slowly start to bond. Oh, and there’s some side story going on with Jack being a bit of a mess when it comes to connecting with his son. Kinda gives it that emotional family vibe amidst all the chaos.
The movie splices comedy into the mix without fully committing because, let’s face it, it’s heavy on action with some awesome car chases and big explosions. But sometimes it’s just too talky in between these two cops who don’t exactly have explosive chemistry. Oddly enough, while all this craziness happens around Santa’s MIA status, the film shifts focus onto his stepbrother instead for extra drama points.
So, Krampus is this creature from old German folklore, but in the movie, he doesn’t really show up much until the end. The film tries to give off that cozy Christmas vibe, but it’s kinda hit or miss—like a string of lights with a couple bulbs that just won’t stay lit. It’s like it’s got all these high-tech gadgets and not much holiday magic.
The fantasy parts of the movie are mostly about the reindeer; they’re pretty much the only female presence and they get called “girls.” Aside from them, this film is one big macho fest. Santa’s wife doesn’t have a lot to do—she’s played by Bonnie Hunt. Meanwhile, Lucy Liu’s character is stuck doing her usual martial arts stuff, and Kiernan Shipka doesn’t get much screen time either. So basically, don’t expect too much heartwarming Christmas charm here—it leans more into dudes being dudes.
